13Jacob M. Self - Missouri University of Science & Technology

I am studying Electrical Engineering at Missouri University of Science & Technology and will graduate in spring of 2017.

I did not select an emphasis area for my degree. I am leaving that to my knowledge, work history, and accomplishments. I am interested in almost all things electrical. I have built my own projects at home including (but not limited to), bicycle generator, mini wind turbine tower, and a solar cell voltmeter.

Prior to starting college, I was a cable technician of all different kinds for around 7 years. One reason for choosing engineering was due to my mind not being challenged. I would install the same system over and over, and there was no advancement as far as I was concerned. Another reason being my children. As a technician I would have work hours that varied, contracts would end and be moved, and I needed to be able to spend more time with my children. I wanted to show them anything is possible.

I love the power engineering field since I have a profound interest in the changes that are being made in the way we generate and distribute our energy. There is a lot of work and planning to be done, and I am proud to be a part of this time in our history.

How has been selected as a PES Scholar impacted you?

I am now a two time recipient of the PES scholarship. This award has been an amazing achievement for my personal goals and recognition. I started my college path in the fall of 2011 having a 3 year old girl and a 1 year old boy. I wanted to prove to myself and to my children that anything is possible through hard work and dedication. Having received this award means so much in solidifying my hard work and the recognition for it. Not only will I graduate with a very high GPA, I was able to do so with minimal side work to provide my family's financial needs while going through college. I am forever grateful for the generosity provided by the donors of the PES scholarship. This has made an impact on not only me, but two aspiring, smart, and wonderful children that look up to me.
